Eva Ionesco II – „The Children of the Night“. News from her wildest years (11-13).

Part II is based on new production from the pen of Eva. In the spring of 2022, she published her second book, LES ENFANTS DE LA NUIT [The Children of the Night].* It takes place shortly after the filming of MALADOLESCENZA [„Let’s Play Love“ or „Puppy Love“], when her friendship with Christian Louboutin began, and she soon had her „first time“ – with someone else. With Christian she had already made out violently, it had excited her very much, which she reports all in the book quite clearly and in incredible detail. But he had to disappoint her in the end. The thirteen-year-old had soon told her in no uncertain terms that he could only have sex with boys.

1976

A year serves as the heading for the first chapter of the book: 1976. Eva was born on July 18, 1965. What she recounts in this chapter she experienced before she was 11 and a half.

First, she recounts memories of the time before, that still preoccupied her [in 1976]:

„Secretly, I was afraid of the release of SPERMULA, a film in which I play a novice who has come from a distant planet to kill men by swallowing their sperm, and who can’t stop masturbating from excitement, and MALADOLESCENZA, in which three children have sex.“ [S. 21]

In 1976 a German magazine featured an article, ranting in indignation about Irina Ionesco letting her then 11 year old daughter, Eva Ionesco, appear in this ‚adult‘ film, and appearing naked at that (though evidently not in any sex scenes). This article included still shots of Eva from the set, both dressed and fully nude, as well as alongside other women who do appear in the film, so clearly she was attached to the project at one point or another . One thing now seems certain: Eva did indeed masturbate in front of the camera during the shoot. This is evident from a quote which can be found in her latest, third book, which appeared in spring 2025:

„…there were the nude scenes, our love scenes in Maladolescenza, [and] the censored footage of me masturbating in front of the crew in Spermula…“ **

Eva then describes strolling through Paris on a warm day, in a yellow mini-sweater, on 10 cm heels, pleased with her body. She felt „inexpressibly feminine“. The fact that the sweater was „furiously“ curved by a matching bra, and that her full blonde hair reached down to her mini-shorts, added to this. Her eyes fell on the many Yankee sleighs, and she was soon fantasizing about how such a Cadillac or Buick would take her – „for a ride with someone somewhere…“ Her mother, dressed in black, follows her at some distance.

Then the three of them sat in a café, and he winked at her, let his eyes wander over her body, and asked Irène [her mother] for her phone number. Eva didn’t like him much, but she had a weakness for handsome rockers, and Gene was one; with his own band and a metallic blue Buick with white leather upholstery. He was 24.

Eva didn’t know yet that soon there would be a „ride“ with this blue Buick – and that meant a ride with Gene.

The „Mandolin“

For the time being, there was a violent sexual encounter with Christian, who, already in the first days when Eva entered the Lyceum, made himself her protector when she was bullied in her class, which happened often.

Soon after, when Christian’s parents were out of the house for a weekend, mother Irène allowed her not yet 12-yo daughter to spend a night with her boyfriend for the first time. She already knew that he was homosexual and therefore saw no danger. Christian:

– How about a mandolin?

– What’s a mandolin?

– A mandolin. Don’t be silly… we’re jerking off!

»He took off his panties and caressed himself, it was a game. I lifted the sheet, he was holding his sex firmly in his hand and one of his thighs up, … In turn I bent a leg and slid my hand over my sex and spread my lips, my clitoris was hard and I rubbed it roughly, the liquid noise dripping from my lips intrigued him we laughed, ready to stop. I said „good…“ He said „go on“. I continued, arching my loins, jerking off even harder, because of the night and the alcohol I was sweating more… He concentrated and his breathing quickened, I barely moaned in a small voice, he came first and I followed him and came but didn’t dare continue my pleasure all the way after him and I interrupted myself.« [S.82]

The ride with the Buick – Eva’s real „first time.“

The second time she met Gene, he actually offered her a ride, but Eva wasn’t ready yet. The third time, Christian just didn’t have time for her, and she now felt the desire tostart my baptism of fire.“ [p.127] She went home, used her eye liner, put on Rouge, and put on her suspender belt with the laces. Then she headed for the place where Gene frequented.

– I knew you’d be back, Eva. Would you like to go for a ride in the car?

– That’s why I came.

After she dropped deep into the upholstery, he invited her to take a sip of whiskey. She would have preferred a Malibu Coco.

Tu viens chez moi? Are you coming to my house?

He put on Blue Moon and stepped on the gas.

Eva preferred to have her first time with a man she didn’t love, because love could have destroyed her if it had come to a brutal end.

– How old are you?

– Eleven and a half.

„Onze et demi bordel,“ [Eleven and a half – brothel] he hissed softly through his teeth.

[In reality, Eva could not have been quite eleven and a half years old at this time. She was born on July 8, 1965, i.e. not until January 18 of the following year. In the book, however, Eva describes several events after this first time and before Christmas. Based on the descriptions of her experiences with Gene, I estimate the end of September or rather October as the correct date, firstly because of the references to nature and the atmosphere, and secondly because of the events before Christmas. Then she would have been 11 years and just over 2 months old, at most 11 and 4 months].

He pulled out a box.

– What’s this?

– A sleeping pill for elephants. If you drink it with alcohol, you’re bound to be right.

She realized the ambush.

Arriving at Gene’s apartment, he served Eva a bourbon with lots of sugar. Then she ended up in his bed. They kissed and…

»…our tongues and saliva mingled.«[p.136]

»Then he ran a finger between my skin and my garter belt. A deflagration where I didn’t hold on to anything, as Hells Angels were known to tie up their old ladies.« [S.137]

»Gene disappeared into the bathroom and returned with half an erection under a midnight-blue silk bathrobe with red polka dots, his muscular belly and shoulders slightly tanned, he took off his watch so I stretched out my legs with the feeling of having grown up in spite of everything. He leaned back to better rest his maxillary in the palm of his hand and grabbed my waist. It was so thin and my hips so narrow. Gene kissed me fiercely, then I pulled my hair back and arched my back, so he got down on his knees to better jerk off, staring at me, and when my eyes could take no more, he quickly lay down on my body, weighing it down. He spread my thighs with his fingers, he couldn’t get into my sex with his own so he spat into his hand to moisten them which allowed him to enter. He came and went at a steady pace [my own translation: He moved his cock back and forth in a regular cadence; mb.] and I felt no pleasure, except a little when he lifted me up holding me in his arms, then again he collapsed onto my body striving to concentrate his eyes tensed as he grabbed one of my breasts. I imitated the rale and the orgasm. He let out a long orgasmic scream, his semen spilling over my belly. He threw his head violently back into his pillow and I thought, that’s it, it is done!« [p.139]

»I felt like telling him all about how I had deflowered myself all by myself for fear of being deflowered by a man. [Eva describes this in detail in Book 1, read about it in my Part I – „The Scandal Child.“] But I held back. He was so disappointed not to be the first. Then sleep engulfed me.«

The other morning, Eva expressed a desire to be driven home. But he supposedly had to go to the lecture urgently, he was still studying, political science. He referred Eva to the nearby R.E.R. [train de banlieue] station. He could not or would not even drive her there.

Eva walked alone along the banks of the Marne, outside of Paris. That was where she had ended up. Her thighs ached.

Back in town, she met an acquaintance who was surprised that she was not at school. Eva confessed that she had slept with a boy and that was why she almost couldn’t walk anymore.

– It’s normal the first time, it’s like when you were riding…

Eva couldn’t have looked much older than in these two pictures (both from Maladolescenza) during the episode with Gene.

[Days later.]

When she bumped into him again at his place, he asked her again if she wanted to go with him, and she went.

– Show me your thighs. [p.146]

She lifted her jupe, and he strokes himself a little over the rough fabric of his pants. And Eva sews herself to him to give him a kiss, but he pushes her away.

Then he reveals her, that he has a plan.

He opens the glove compartment and takes out a revolver. Eva is afraid.

– Did you see that?

– What is it?

– A Beretta. I can teach you how to shoot.

– Why not.

– But you have to be sensible.

– What’s your plan?

He lets his armed hand fall onto her thigh. Then he tells her that he plans to rob a supermarket. Eva was to stay in the Buick and probably observe the surroundings. She thought about it and came to the conclusion that he was a gangster – and agreed.

– I knew you wouldn’t say no, baby.

They kissed, he dropped his pants, got an erection. She gave him a blow job. „I preferred that, especially in the car in white leather.“ He tickled Eva’s back with his Beretta. Then he pushed her face back violently. He didn’t come in her mouth but in a Kleenex, which he hastily pulled out of a side pocket. [p.147]

Eva then turned down a date with Christian because she wanted to wait for Gene’s phone; the call to rob the cash register. „I was totally obsessed with the Buick with the white leather upholstery.“ [p.149] When Gene finally picked her up, the robbery had already taken place and failed.

This time it was to be even less to Eva’s pleasure. He wanted to take her anally. Eva: “If you touch me, I’ll scream.” He then threw away the Vaseline jar. What happened next is unclear. He instructed Eva to relax. Then: “He moved back and forth brutally and mechanically.”

Finally, he let her know that he had also had sex with her mother. [p.153]

In response to his suspicious questions, Eva confessed to her boyfriend Christian that she had slept with Gene, and he with her mother. [Gene’s fiancée, by the way, posed for Eva’s mother for her black-and-white photographs with the discreet sadomaso touch. Eva had already witnessed this – see Part I.] Christian exploded with rage, and Eva called Gene to tell him it was over between them. [p. 163]

By now it was Christmas. It seemed to Eva that Irène was somehow trying to avoid the celebration. The little fir tree, bought at the last minute, had lost all its needles the first night. Because of lack of space, it had been moved too close to the radiator.

– You slept with Gene, the crazy rocker from the Marne shore? Tell me the truth.

– What’s it to you, you stupid cunt?!

– I need to know.

Pour quoi fairrre? [Eva imitated, as she liked to do in such moments, her mother’s Romanian accent].

– Because you’re still a child and he’s a creep, a dangerous psychopath….

„I kicked her fir tree, the baubles crumbled into dust.“

– I haven’t been a child for a long time, Maman! With what I’ve been through, I’m ten times a woman, remember!

– And you let your mother see him again, your Chéri?

– After what he did to us, I don’t think so.

– He took you from behind, didn’t he?

– And then you come to me with this… [p.168]

Then, somewhat abruptly, Irène handed her an envelope.

Tiens, this is sous for your Christmas. You will treat yourself to waffles at the Tuileries with Christian, and pick up the jacket with the blue fox fur. Mamie is not here. [Mamie was Eva’s great-grandmother and caregiver, who lived with her]. Christmas without Mamie is not Christmas.

Finally, she distracted Eva by pointing to the upcoming Rome visit for them both. It was about the promotion for Maladolescenza [„Let’s play love“ / „Puppy Love“]. [That was typical Irène. She had probably noticed long ago that Eva was quite pissed off by this film, to put it in English. But she gave her the prospect of a promotional appearance as a treat. The woman had difficulties seeing something that was in her own interest through the eyes of a third party, e.g. her daughter].

Striptease for a motor bike

There where the prostitutes stroll, where the fry stalls and all kinds of street kitchens fill the air with sweet and oily smells, there Eva was looking for the caravan of Marcelle. As usually in her forays through the city, she was accompanied by Christian and other friends from the gang. They already knew that there was this special company that offered a kind of people’s strip tease. It offered the viewer the opportunity to admire semi-well-known personalities from show business and related branches naked for very little money.

Eva had a plan. She dreamed of having her own „velomoteur“. This probably meant a velo-solex, that eminently practical thing of urban life which was actually just a normal bicycle. After about ten somewhat strenuous pedal turns, however, a weak petrol engine could be lowered onto the front wheel. Thereupon this took over the drive by direct rubber roller contact with modest speed. Such a vehicle would probably have given her an [even] stronger presence in Paris…. The money for it she could have acquired by own strip tease appearances, so she thought.

The twelve-year-old was over moral scruples:

Since I was no longer a normal girl, because my mother had corrupted and soiled me, the stink protected me, and I wasn’t afraid of it. For some it was just an aesthetic matter, a slovenliness, for me it possessed moral virtues, I found in it a form of brotherhood, a tacit balance, a humanity.“

Outside the caravan, a preview was underway, with strip tease participants, dressed promisingly, loudly touting to attract customers. Eva overcame the age barrier with the help of an acquaintance from her gang who was serving there. Then she bumped into Marcelle inside:

– What do you want here, beauty?

– To do strip tease, but for that you have to watch the play first.

– How old are you? Show me your papers.

„I showed her my identity card. She whistled.“

– It doesn’t work here. You’re too young. But in Soissons on weekends…

– How much is there?

– 500 francs for two days, lodging included. [S.181]

Eva did not forget the reference to Soissons so quickly. She tried to realize the dream with her own velomoteur for a long time.

Maladolescenza – the promotional tour.

She was 12 [by her own account] when Eva paid a visit to Rome with her mother. She had a mandatory appearance there, she had to give interviews. The film Maladolescenza [„Let’s play love“ / „Puppy Love“] was finished, now the promotion was about to start. Eva was repelled by the idea of meeting the director again in the presence of Irène. Irène and the director had become closer during the filming, so close that Irène had become pregnant by him.

The reporter of a sensational newspaper wanted to know from her whether she had really slept together with Lara and Martin, her film partners, 11 and 17 years old, during the shooting. Eva answered in the negative. [p.207] Then he asked if she had made love yet. Eva: No. He tried to clarify other important questions, such as this:

– Are you wearing underpants?

– Why are you asking me this question? [p.208]

Irène intervened that Eva was tired. The interviewer resisted. He had to deliver an interview that did justice to the scandalous character of the film. Irène jumped in with anecdotes from her life. She said that she had slept with her piano teacher at the same age Eva had made the film, 11, and she had never complained. He had taught her everything very early.

The next day, they found the newspaper with the interview at the newsstand. The headline: „The madam and her daughter without underpants.“

They left Rome in a hurry. But the film, Eva writes in the book, fulfilled the producer’s wish. From the first screenings, she says, it surpassed the attendance figures of Rocky. [Rocky, starring Sylvester Stallone, premiered on November 21, 1976, and became a huge success].

In the Italian daily La Stampa of May 25, 1977, I found a report about a press meeting with Eva Ionesco, Lara Wendel, and the two mothers in a Milan club, in front of a „forest of photographers.“ When asked if she liked the film, an angry Eva is said to have replied:

„It is vulgar, shocking and senseless. I hope it will be censored in France, because I would be ashamed in front of my friends.“

[The above sentence seems to me a bit too elaborate for a twelve year old. The journalist of La Stampa apparently went over it again]. Eva is also reported to have said that she would no longer make erotic films. It is interesting that during the whole time, „trying and nagging,“ her mother is said to have stood behind the „porn diva in miniature“ and admonished her: „Don’t be so grumpy. Smile…“ [By the way, I found more than four reports about Eva in the archives of La Stampa alone, from the period from about May 1976 to July 1977, each time with a picture, but not actually shot on the respective date, but taken from the „maternal“ publications of Eva’s erotika. Among them was one with the child, about nine years old, dressed only in a thong, lying halfway on her side, grabbing her panties at the hips as if she were trying to slip them down. And this in the conservative-liberal La Stampa. Unimaginable today].

Eva next to Jody Foster. Both were supposed to mark the new type of girl – libertine, uninhibited, enlightened.

Also on that Milan date, a journalist wanted to know if the girls had liked Fabrizio, their „lusty“ film partner [he did not attend the Milan event]. They reportedly answered in chorus:

„Per niente, è brutto, magro come un chiodo e bianco come un verme. E non si decideva mai a spogliarsi nelle scene d’amore. „ii

„Not at all, he is ugly/stupid/unkind, and thin like a nail and white like a worm. And he could never bring himself to undress before the love scenes.

The scathing verdict on this “boy”, this pale worm who never wanted to take his clothes off, becomes particularly explosive when compared with the characterization of the rock musician (‘Gene’) whom Eva had chosen for her first “real” sex two or three months after the end of filming:

“Gene was not a tender person, and the evil in him attracted me like a magnetic pole.”

The 11 1/2 year old girl wanted to know “it”, and she didn’t want someone hesitant or tender. Perhaps because Fabrizio had disappointed her, or perhaps he had disappointed her because she had expected more from this first sexual contact.

Then, on June 16, 1977, came an announcement that seemed like the final note and the transition to a new era. The secretary general of the Italian Women’s Association is said to have personally filed a complaint in Geneva against the violation of the Charter of the Rights of the Child at the UN Commission on Human Rights. Indicative of the discourse of the 1970s is the justification. In order to put an end to „this dirty market„….

“ … an appeal is made to a worldwide body of „high moral value“ and „to all civilized peoples“ to „put an end to this defilement of the conscience of children.“

The film is said to be „…surely the prelude to a future corrupt society devoid of spiritual and moral values if this is not stopped.“ iii

There was no talk yet of psychological consequences in the children. It was still about morality, about civilization and the intactness of society – and in the child about his conscience and – of course – his purity.. Not really about the child as a vulnerable person, not about the child itself. The child is not yet seen as a victim.

Eva’s second „first time“ – of the other kind

Not as a victim, but as an actor or co-actor, Eva appears in the next chapter, and that „without conscience„.

The adventure began in the most famous disco in Paris at the time, called La Main Bleue, which was already challenged by the emerging competition of Le Palace, where Eva and her gang were located, although she also frequented other venues. In order to outdo the Palace, the entertainer of La Main Bleue wanted to launch a huge party, to which he also invited Eva, who was not yet twelve years old, with her „striptease of minors,“ as Vanity Fair magazine later called it.iv

She was accompanied by a not-yet-thirteen-year-old. Before the performance, they administered heroin. Of her performance, set to Françoise Hardy’s then-current earworm „Tous les garçons et les filles de mon âge,“ Eva writes how shouts of „naked“ rang out from all sides, and she bared body part after body part, „like at a medical visit.“ However, she kept her bathing trunks, style 1960, on.

Also in the audience was Edwige [Edwige Belmore], known in Paris as the queen of punk; model for Thierry Mugler and others; singer and leader of her own band Mathematique moderne; bouncer and public face at Dancing Le Palace, where Eva established her reputation as the mascot of Paris.

„Edwige“ counted among the New York and Paris party scene around stars like Andy Warhol, was a regular at New York’s legendary Studio 54 [where she once took Eva – see my Part III, currently off], went with… Blondie singer Debbie Harry, Bianca Jagger…. out. An encounter with Paloma Picasso opened her up to the world of the jet set…. „With her platinum blonde short hair and androgynous beauty, Belmore had … …captivated fashion designers such as Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier.“ Gaultier called her the „most beautiful platinum angel“ he had ever met on Twitter after her death. Eva is said to have later confessed that she was at times fiercely in love with Edwige during that period of her life.v „Her beauty resembled that of a Teutonic deity.“ [p.229] Somehow, Eva and Edwige found their way home to the latter after the raucous feast. What came next went beyond being in love.

»Mes pieds contre les siens et ma tête entre ses seins…“ [my feet against hers and my head between her breasts], so it began.« Then:

»Our naked bodies met in the mildness of the night, her lips kissed mine, her hand rested on my belly, and then her tongue licked my sex. I caressed her, bad, suddenly I felt her stiffen, and our sighs were stifled.« [S.230]

This must have been around spring or early summer 1977, at any rate before July 27 [1977], a date mentioned a little further on in the book. Eva was barely 12 years old, and Edwige had always greeted her with „my beautiful“ and „my Bébé“ and similar flattering forms of address. She was eight years older than Eva, around 20 at the time.

The theft

Eva could not get rid of the idea of a velomoteur. She now wanted to turn it into reality in a classic way, namely by simply stealing a bicycle. To do this, she equipped herself with a pair of pliers, as was already recommended for high-end bicycles at the time. Together with a friend, she then tried one of the next nights, but failed because her pliers proved to be too weak. They left the scene on separate ways. Eva soon heard a voice out of the darkness asking for her identification. It was a policeman, and he led her to the police station for lack of the necessary papers.

As she was there, waiting for her mother to come and get her out, her thoughts were cloudy, when Edwige came back to her. „I missed her body, her smell. I regretted that I had not been able that night to make love to her properly and make her come [faire jouir].“ [S.232]

On the way home, she pestered Irène to let Christian come with them on vacation to Mykonos. Irène must have whined seven times that she herself had never had any friends, but finally agreed. She even promised to talk to Christian’s mother about it. Eva traveled together with some friends.

On the island, Eva shared a room with Christian. Such an arrangement meant a lot of physical closeness in an idyllic location, and thus would have allowed for a lot of intimacy. One could assume that Eva felt she had reached the goal of her longings. It actually went in this direction, but it still remained unsatisfactory for Eva – in every sense of the word. The following quote shows this – stark, but also tragic [written in the book as a letter to Christian]:

»We’re naked I got fat from the booze, we’re rubbing each other’s sex. Mine smells strong, you concentrate on yours. We’re jerking off like friends … The need for you to come inside me, I tell you, but you pull away: „Pointless to insist, I can’t do it, we’ve already tried it, there’s no point.“ You said that and I took to the streets barefoot with my nylon bag and ran like mad. I’ve always felt lost and this idea of abandonment invades me in this street populated by chattering birds: love, the need to be fulfilled, the prediction that the loved one will arrive, if I don’t die first.« [S.268]

»On est nu j’ai grossi à cause de l’alcool, on se frotte le sexe. Le mient sent fort, tu te concentre sur le tien. On se branle comme des copains … Le besoin que tu rentre en moi, je te le dis, mais tu te retires: „Impossible d’insister, j’y arriverai pas, on a déjà essayé ça sert à rien.“ Tu as dis ça et je suis partie pieds nus avec mon sac de nylon dans les rues et j’ai couru comme une folle. Je me suis toujours sentie perdue et cette idée d’abandon m’envahit dans cette rue peuplée d’oiseaux bavards: l’amour, le besoin d’être comblée, la prédiction que l’être aimée arrivera, si je meurs pas d’avant.« [S.268]

»I went back to the yacht, in rags, my hair too varnished to prostitute myself, they hesitated, they thought I was ugly, so I went ashore.« [270]

»Je suis remontée sur le yacht en guenilles, les cheveux trop laqués pour me prostituer, ils hésitaient, ils me trouvaient laideronne alors je suis descendue à terre.«] [270]

Does this mean that Eva went to the yacht, and wanted to prostitute herself there, but her hair was too heavily lacquered, which is why „they“ hesitated? Or she had painted her hair too much because she did not want to prostitute herself?

Prostitution

It is not the only time in the book that prostitution is mentioned. Not much later, it actually happens. It is probably this one time – referred to as such by Eva – that she briefly mentions in the first book. She seemed to act out of a kind of frustration that set in when another boy she adored did not want to kiss her. This one, too, as he himself said, could only do it with boys. Eva had heard from Justine, who was the same age, that this boy had been raped by a priest when he was a little boy. There she probably meant in a fit of defiance that, in such a moment, one could only prostitute oneself , to which Justine immediately agreed. As Eva specified, the Champs Elysées would be a suitable place. [p.285] Justine:

– Agreed. And how much do we want to charge?

– 500 francs

– 500 for both?

– 500 for each, Justine!

– … and how far do we go?

– That depends on what he wants from us…. you just say to each other that you’ll sit together naked and give him a blowjob, but not really, and if he wants to go further, you put a zero on it and say it’s for the whole night.

On the way, Eva noticed a poster at a kiosk and said, „Oh merde, Andreas Baader killed himself!“ The present author Eva probably wants to mark the date with this in the book. Baader suicided on October 18, 1977, so Eva was 12 years and 3 months old on the day of her more or less successful attempt at prostitution.

About this twelve-year-old girl who was just looking for a suitable John in the hotel salon, the current book author Eva goes on to say:

»I had to take this pleasure, to snatch it from me in one way or another. Pleasure was the power of the poor … I’ll fuck you, take your money, and ciao Mao.« [S.287]

…by which she probably also implies something like revenge as a motive for this escapade – a grimly joyful revenge. Well, it came then rather undramatically.

By eye communication she noticed the interest of an older Iranian. Justine let her vest slide over her shoulders, and Eva pulled her long hair halfway down her face and opened her mouth teasingly.

The three of them went to his room. There they explained the tariff to him:

– I’m taking off my clothes, and that’s 500 for everyone.

The girls‘ brazen tone surprised them themselves. They ducked him, he stuck to the ‚you‘ until they told him their [false] first names. There was haggling. Their eyes fell on jewelry lying around. He promised them each a bracelet in silver.

Then Justine put her lip on the Iranian’s. Eva lifted her sweater and her jupe. She wore no panties, his hand approached her crack, she pushed it back. Justine stroked his head. Then he threw himself on Eva’s belly, she pulled back.

He wanted more from Eva and promised her more in return. Eva: „C’est non!

– We shouldn’t even be here, imagine at our age, you risk a lot, Grandpa ! [S.292]

That was close to blackmail. He handed them the promised reward.

On the way home Eva threw the bracelet away.

Prostitution for the third time

There was another event related to prostitution, but this time Eva was lured into a trap. At the beginning, however, there was still her clear will to offer herself again.

»I was lighting a cigarette on the corner of Boulevard de Clichy and Villa de Guelma when two men approached me with angry expressions:«

– That’s 500 [Eva; apparently in error.]

– What are you doing? Come with me. [S.350]

They took her into their midst and led her into a run-down building, through a room where some men were sitting around and many were going in and out, and then forced her into a room where a guy with check doors asked her if she was prostituting herself.

– No. It’s the first time.

– You feel like prostituting yourself ?

Oui. [p. 351]

[…]

– You want to prostitute yourself and work for us ?

Ben ouais.

– How old are you?

– Almost 13.

Then he asked her about her parents, acquaintances and so on. Eva answered that there was no one there except her somewhat crazy mother, but that she was being pursued by the Youth Welfare Office, her social assistant called herself Madame Chenu.

The keyword Youth Welfare Office triggered an explosion. Someone shoved her in the back so hard that she staggered to the floor. The boss shouted at her that she was making fun of them and strongly advised her not to show her face in that corner again.

Finally, Eva followed up with the everybody strip tease. She sought out Marcelle at her traveling strip joint and asked her how the opportunity was now in Soissons. Marcelle advised her to leave. [S.353]

The youth welfare office intervenes.

Eva could have said that about the Youth Welfare Office in all naiveté; in any case, it was true.

Already at the end of July 1977, even before Mykonos, the blue letter from the Procureur de la République [roughly: District Attorney] had been in Irène’s kitchen. Eva suspected then that it would destroy her life – the life she had been used to leading for about a year. Irène had told her tonelessly that if she continued to stay away from school and disappear at night, she would end up in a centre d’acceuil [juvenile home, juvenile institution]. [S.259]

Months later, the Lyceum called to tell the mother that Eva was no longer appearing at school, and threatened to expel her. [p.296]

Then the social assistant announced her visit, for November 20. Irène instructed Eva how she should behave, what she should say, and that, for example, they would give the impression that Eva lived with her, and so on.

When the lady from the social welfare office slowly walked through Irène’s chaotic mini-apartment with its black-painted walls, and she encountered the skull and crossbones and the dissected mannequin, and found only fishnet stockings, garter belts and a Godemiche in the drawers, she first realised that this was no environment for a child.

She wanted to know if Eva had her own closet and where she had room for homework. Eva did not show solidarity with her mother, but used the opportunity to draw attention to her predicament. She said that her mother had never given her space in the apartment, and that she slept with her great-grandmother. She also complained about the lack of a jogging suit, which is why she cannot participate in the school’s physical education classes.

Madame Chenu made it clear that the priority was Eva’s. The mother had to give her space and stop photographing her daughter, otherwise Eva would be placed in a family or a home.

As soon as she disappeared, Irène promised her daughter a good life if she continued to pose for her – no one would figure it out.

Eva had to see a psychologist, who wanted to know if she had had sexual relations with men, had contacts with prostitutes, and what her feelings were about the photo shoot. She hated the guy, gave only approximate answers; for example, that she did not appreciate the photos too much, that she had been doing it since the age of 4, and it was okay. Now in the book she writes unequivocally that she hated these photo sessions, that she felt „dépossédée“ [no longer belonging to herself], but that it would have revived her suffering if she had had to tell a man. [S.316]

Eva also had to see a gynecologist. The social assistant had demanded that he examine her hymen because they thought she had had relations with men, he opened up to her.

– You know, I don’t want my hymen to be looked at, it’s my hymen, I decide.

– Then we don’t do it… I agree with your decision. [S.353]

Later, Eva had to go to Madame Chenu’s office.

She made it clear to her that she was skipping school far too often and wanted to know why. Eva did not know the answer.

Then came the opening on another point:

– Your mother claims that you take drugs.

[With which Irène herself refuted her story that the Youth Welfare Office had been alerted by the New York police after they had caught Eva dealing drugs. The latter might be true, but no information had been sent from there to the French Youth Welfare Office. It came from Irène herself.]

Eva confirmed that she did not want to live with her mother. Her mother frightened her, she loved Satan and wanted to become an SM Dominatrice.

At home she wrote a letter to herself: Chère Eva, je t’aime beaucoup, jamais je voudrais te quitter. [Dear Eva, I love you very much, I would never want to leave you.]

She tore up the letter and threw it away, but then regretted it. Then she changed her clothes, dressed all in leather, and played with her Opinel [folding knife] in front of the mirror:

»Tu me cherche des crosses, baby?«

[Do you want crosses with me, baby?]

Eva saw an opportunity in the slowness of justice. Unfortunately, she missed it. She let her friends talk her into a burglary. It failed and was reported. Madame Chenu to Eva: „This is not good if the judge sees this in my report.“ [S.402]

The court hearing came, everything happened very quickly at once. The charges against the mother concerned her photographs, and that she could not give Eva a healthy way of life [l’hygiene de vie], also the lack of training. Her parental rights were taken away. The main things that spoke against Eva were her robbery offenses and her detentions for drugs. The judge estimated that the situation could only get worse and foresaw placement in a juvenile facility [referred to as a prison by Eva in the book].

Madame Chenu put all her good, motherly will and knowingness to work, pleading for one last chance. She made her case with fervor. Eva, who until then had thought of her as more of a comic figure, wept. She promised the judge to keep well, to sleep at Maman’s, to attend school [again another], and to do no more foolishness. Maman promised to change her lifestyle and stop photographing Eva. [According to the book, she then arranged through an advocate to do what was necessary to ensure the upkeep of the photos in case they were seized by the court].

Eva was given one last chance by the judge. [S. 441]

On the evening of the next day she dressed like a queen to celebrate this chance, put on her most beautiful skirt to go dancing, put on makeup. She felt like losing herself in the lights of the night boulevard….

Then, with these words the book ends:

»Charles approached slowly. He was smoking a cigarette, up close his face seemed huge to me, he seemed so youthful, and the longer I looked at him the bigger he got, or I got smaller, I don’t remember. He pulled me into his arms and said to me:

– You are an angel.

I understood that he was.«

– You are my angel, come, Eva, let’s dance.

Charles Serruya was to become Eva’s life companion for the next few years, including the time she was out in Montreuil at the juvenile facility. It was now late summer 1978, Eva had just turned thirteen. Charles Serruya, according to my research, was 29 at the time. She still counts him among her friends, and thanks him on the last page of the book, next to Christian Louboutin, who no longer wanted to house her overnight because he feared the Youth Welfare Office lurking behind Eva.

Furthermore, she thanks Justine, with whom she had made her first attempt at prostitution, and a few more pals from the Palace gang days.

NOT A VICTIM STORY.

In the final pages, she notes that…

the girl in her actually exists, „despite all the damage“, and that the woman growing up is „damaged, fragile, but NOT DESTROYED.

And then she declares her claim, her program:

„I deserve pleasure, love, sharing. I want to be the prey of a man who is completely alive and melt in his arms in a movement as intimate as sleep.“
