The lecture below was given by a Viennese psychiatrist to his colleagues around 1903. It was about the „premature awakening of the sex drive„. The doctor had two such cases in his practice, one of which concerned a small boy with hydrocephalus, while the other concerned a normally developed girl – or one who would have developed normally had it not been for…

[…] »But I believe that [such] premature awakening of the urge can also occur in an intellectually undamaged, so to speak, much more valuable [ouch! A common categorization of people among academics at the time; mb.] individual, and that one may then be very compelled to fight masturbation with all means at one’s disposal. As proof of this, I would like to introduce you to a second child who is now 5 3/4 years old and whose short vita ante acta [life before the first contact with a doctor] contains strange details.«
»This child is also the first to come from a marriage of several years. There is also no direct admission of any stressful moments, but the mother, whom I know, is a highly nervous, one could almost say hysterical person and is of Oriental descent. The child was born normally, developed normally and only became conspicuous to the parents two years ago, when it was 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 years old. It began to lose weight, changed its previously good-natured mood, became angry, irritable, grumpy and one day was found masturbating. But the parents did not attach any importance to the matter, thought they could punish the child and did not even tell the doctors, whom they consulted because of the little one’s bad appearance, what they had once observed. The child was given all sorts of roborantia [tonics; mb.], both externally and internally, but always looked very bad.«
»About a year ago, however, the situation changed and the parents were forced in an unpleasant way to investigate the child’s masturbation more closely. A stranger informed the mother that she had observed the child at a public playground when she attempted to touch an adult girl ad genitalia and, when she was reprimanded by the latter, masturbated in public. The parents now interrogated the nanny and when the mother asked me for advice about the child about two months ago, I learned the following terrible things from the mother and child:
»The child was handed over to a nineteen-year-old nanny at the age of two and was, so to speak, at her mercy for over two years. This person, whom I was unable to identify, and of whom I know nothing except that her name was A., practiced mutual manustupration [old term for masturbation; the author uses both terms side by side; mb.] with the child from the age of two to four. She made the child dig her fingers into her [the nanny’s; mb.] genitals and – perhaps the monster was a pedophile – masturbated while she manustuprated the child. But she went further and introduced willing playmates and adults of the female sex to the child wherever she could. She also tried it with a four-year-old boy, whom she manustuprated in the presence of the little one. But as much as the little girl liked to have fun with women, she didn’t like boys and declared that she wouldn’t take part. The poor child was then taught how to use quills and other objects and was trained to coat her fingers with sticky substances to increase her pleasure. The parents knew nothing better than to chase the seductress away and tried to deal with the child, who continued to masturbate, with punishments, wrappings etc.«
»But when none of this helped, they sent the little girl to relatives in the Orient. That was the icing on the cake. There were plenty of Turkish servants who let themselves be manhandled by the child and did the same for her. The little girl told me about all her „circumstances“ and that she only had a taste for young women; the old ones had breasts like sacks. A. had the most beautiful breasts [the girl said], they were like oranges; and she couldn’t forget A. in general. The parents confirmed all this. When the child returned, no punishment or threat could stop her from masturbating openly and secretly in front of her parents and friends. She often went into a veritable paroxysm [strong increase, seizure; mb.] of rage and despair that she no longer had her A., for which she often screamed and cried day and night.«
»This is how the little creature was brought to me. I found the child emaciated to a skeleton, covered in bruises and, when I undressed it, I found a frightening fluor albus [white discharge; mb.]. I immediately stained a specimen and as I fortunately found no gonococci, I decided to leave the catarrh to itself as a traumatic one, as I wanted to avoid any future indagation [exploration] of this area. It soon healed. The child’s appearance was such that I could hardly believe that there was no deeper organic ailment. The girl’s psychological behavior was horrifying to me because of the openness with which she revealed her adventures and her familiarity with the depths and abysses of sexual perversions and normal sexual functions, as well as her absolute lack of shame.«
»In order not to be too verbose, I will briefly report that I forced the little one to be handed over into the hands of a proven pedagogue on the same day and had it taken to Dr. Heller’s institution in Grinzing. At the same time I made a vigorous attempt at suggestion [similar technique like Hypnosis; mb], which was also successful. Since then I have repeated the suggestive treatment once or twice a week. I cannot claim that the child falls into hypnosis, but during the undoubtedly existing concentration, psychic concentration, for example in slight engourdissement [freezing, anesthesia; mb.], I give the little one energetic suggestions that she must forget everything that has happened, never think such abominable things again, etc.«
»The child was found masturbating twice, shortly after entering the institution. A second more frequent practice is ruled out, as the facilities of the institution are exemplary in this respect. [Presumably the child’s arms were tied to the bed frame or tied up during the day. Such methods were also practiced by parents in the 19th century, as they feared serious physical and character consequences; mb.] The blossoming of the child also documents the security in this relationship.«
»It is no longer recognizable today and any memory of the past, even a visit from the parents, is carefully avoided. I therefore give myself up to the hope that if the parents remain sensible and leave the child in the institution, the purpose will be achieved, i.e. the girl will forget its past. I do not emphasize that everything necessary for her mental and physical development will continue to happen. I estimate the duration of the stay away from home to be years [just in order to prevent masturbation! mb.], if the success is otherwise to be a lasting one.«
»… I will allow myself (only) one remark: from the child’s anamnesis one can recognize the significance of seduction in childhood for the determination, for the direction [!] of the sexual drive. The child may have been led forever in the opposite direction by the influence of the seductress [i.e. it may become a lesbian; mb.] Even if it is possible to correct the prematurely awakened drive, fragments of memory may come alive again at puberty and the child, who is likely to develop normally into a woman, may pick up where he or she left off today. Then one can be faced with the conundrum of contrary sexual sensation without secondary somatic concomitants. (The latter is an incomprehensible sentence for me. It probably means that according to the state of knowledge – or theory – at the time, lesbian orientation was normally accompanied by physical characteristics – i.e. male characteristics in physique, which however were not present in this girl, so that her lesbian sexual feelings were unexpected for those who did not know her story; mb.]«
»I have no intention of going into these things in detail here and have only taken the liberty of presenting the two cases because I believe they are of practical as well as theoretical interest.«
